Privacy

I run this site myself as a private person and I'm the one responsible for whatever data it handles. If you have a question about it, write to tim at kicker.dev.

Hosting

GitHub Pages serves the files and Cloudflare sits in front of it. Every request passes through both, so they see your IP address and the headers your browser sends along. GitHub says it logs the IP for security. There's no way to deliver a website without that step, which is my legitimate interest under Art 6(1)(f) GDPR. Both companies are based in the US and certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

Visitor statistics

I want to know which posts people actually read, so I count visits with Umami, GoatCounter and Rybbit. All three run on my own server and none of them passes anything on to another company. There are no ads on this site and no Google Analytics.

Umami doesn't use cookies. It tells visits apart by hashing the site, your IP address and your browser's user agent together with a salt that changes every day. The Umami numbers are public.

GoatCounter never stores your IP address or user agent. It keeps a session in memory for eight hours and then drops it.

Rybbit also hashes your IP address and user agent, with a hash that changes daily. To spot bots its script checks which graphics card your browser reports.

At the moment there is no fixed limit on how long counted visits are kept.

Comments

The comment section under each post runs on Isso, again on my own server. It stores what you write plus the name, email address and website you choose to give. Your email address is never shown. Isso keeps your IP address only in shortened form (for IPv4 the last block is cut off). After you post, a cookie lets you edit your comment for 15 minutes. Your browser also remembers your name, email and website for next time. I leave comments up unless you ask me to delete yours or it's spam or abuse.

Six of the games post your result under that day's puzzle as a comment on their own once a round is over: Wordle, Spelling Bee, Letter Boxed, Connections, Mini Crossword and Sudoku (Spelling Bee waits until you reach Genius). The name you used for an earlier comment here shows up next to it. If you never commented, the result appears without a name. It's stored like any other comment, shortened IP address included.

What stays in your browser

Light or dark theme, the language you picked last and your progress in the games are saved in your browser and nowhere else (apart from the game results that end up as comments, see above). Clearing the site data removes all of it.

Your rights

You can ask me what I have stored about you. I'll correct it, delete it or stop using it if you want me to. An email to tim at kicker.dev is enough. You can also complain to the Austrian Data Protection Authority (dsb.gv.at).
