Der Föhn is a daily newspaper with a print run of one. That copy is mine. My home server puts it together every night and in the morning it reaches me as a PDF, written in German and 14 pages long on 26 October. The first issue came out on 21 October 2026.

What goes in

Each night starts with collecting everything that is new since the last issue. That means the feeds in my RSS reader, the Vorarlberg news from my archive halbat (state parliament and state law gazette included), YouTube videos, Reddit threads and the top comments on Hacker News. For the issue of 26 October it came to 657 sources, with 30 videos running almost eleven hours between them and 2,940 comments.

My own feeds are only the starting point though. Every topic is researched further with sources I do not follow at all. A section called Nicht in deinen Quellen (not in your sources) checks the day against ORF, Der Standard, heise, Euractiv and Politico and picks up what my feeds missed. On 26 October one of those was Greece banning social media for under-15s. Telegram channels only count as tips, so anything from there needs a second source or is printed with the name of whoever claims it.

How a topic is built

A language model (Claude) reads all of that, plans ten to twelve topics and orders them by weight and by how new they are. There are no fixed sections any more and the label above a topic is just that, a label. The only quota is two topics on Vorarlberg and two on Austria.

Each topic is written so that it makes sense without any background and follows the same pattern. A box called Was das bedeutet explains why it matters. Was Leser sagen sums up how people discuss it on Reddit and under videos, drawn from many comments instead of a single quote. A third box, Wo sich die Quellen widersprechen, puts the claims that do not fit together side by side. In the 26 October issue Putin puts Russian troops five kilometres from Zaporizhzhia there, next to the military analyst Ruslan Leviev, who says 25. Sources are numbered in the text and collected at the back, 211 of them that day.

The rest of the paper

After the topics come short news from Vorarlberg and Austria and, when there is anything new, a section on what was tabled in the Landtag or published in the state law gazette. Kurz notiert carries brief news from the rest of the world, Was sich anbahnt follows things that are still open and the front page has a number of the day.

The layout is LaTeX, set in Libertinus and Fira Sans. One page at the back is called Werkstatt (workshop). It lists what was read, what could not be reached and what the issue would have cost at API prices, about 12 dollars.
